Chernobyl Episode 5 Episode 6 HBO. “Chernobyl”. HBO

HBO’s “Chernobyl,” a five-part miniseries that debuted May 6, dramatizes the true story of the 1986 nuclear accident that was one of the worst human-made disasters of all time. Though the event is no secret, press coverage in the months and years that followed painted broad strokes and sweeping statements. The miniseries offers viewers a tighter focus, examining the women and men who were caught in the middle of the catastrophe. Minute by minute, it recounts the events that occurred in late April and shows how much of Europe was at risk — and ultimately saved — from a radioactive debacle. The high level of detail in the series makes this story that much more suspenseful. To find locations that appeared authentic, filmmakers looked east at countries with a Soviet history, says producer Sanne Wohlenberg (“Black Mirror,” “Vikings”). “We needed a tax credit and a place that has enough crew base to facilitate a show of our size,” she says. So Wohlenberg looked to Lithuania, a former Soviet Republic just northwest of Ukraine that’s now an independent nation, which offered a 20% tax break. Most important, though, was the country’s nuclear power plant, which was partly decommissioned.|It makes perfect sense that “Chernobyl” feels more like a horror movie at times than a traditional drama. Mazin undertook an extraordinary task when breaking down the Chernobyl disaster into (somewhat) digestible parts. Each of the series’ five episodes — all of which Mazin wrote — follows a core cast of characters, but crucially, also serve distinctly different purposes. Guiding our journey through it all are skeptical scientist Valery Legaslov (Jared Harris), Soviet Deputy Prime Minister Boris Shcherbina (Stellan Skarsgard), and whistleblower nuclear physicist Ulana Khomyuk (Emily Watson). The stark contrast between this kind of courage versus the cravenness of every stubborn bureaucrat who stood in clarity’s way is what makes “Chernobyl” as chilling as it is essential. The sheer incompetence and hubris that the series reveals as the catastrophe’s ultimate culprits rather than any one particular person are more frustrating than I can possibly describe. But even if it’s viscerally painful to feel the true depths of just how badly the people in power failed, and how relentlessly they tried to deny it, that surge of furious empathy is also exactly the series’ point. It was featured in their episode LOST in Hawaii. In the American broadcast of the episode, the LOST inter-title was suddenly placed among stars, with the Starship Enterprise soaring through the "O" in LOST as part of a promotion for J.J. Abrams' new film Star Trek. 11. In This Place is Death, Charlotte tells Daniel that she's not allowed to have chocolate before dinner, which end up being her last words. 12. It is possible that Daniel may change the future by telling young Charlotte to never come back to the island, but it is also possible that he caused the thing he was trying to prevent. 13. Want to take any more damn time with those guns, Jack and Kate? 14. I love how they poke fun at the fact that everyone on this show automatically knows how to use a gun even though they have no experiences whatsoever that would require them to use a gun. 15. Radzinsky is a psychopath. The immediate effects of nuclear exposure are depicted repeatedly and yet without fanfare, giving the feeling that this wasn’t gore for gore’s sake but instead an accurate depiction of what happens to the human body in such circumstances. But the terror came from more than just nuclear radiation exposure. It came from watching the ideological clash between scientists and the government, witnessing USSR leadership make decisions in direct opposition to scientists’ recommendations. It was utter anguish to watch their methods of denial, motivated by desires for convenience and for keeping up appearances. In a moment where climate change is somehow at the same time both a contentious political issue and an incontrovertible scientific fact, the suggestion of “opinion” with regard to damning scientific evidence nearly hit too close to home. In this way, Chernobyl seems to be perfectly suited for the times. In 2019 America, in addition to this tension around climate change, fear of nuclear weapons and the damage they can cause is never far from the political conversation. Neither is a deep mistrust of Russia, formerly the USSR. Whether Chernobyl stokes these fears or just happens to tell a true story that perfectly fits them is up for debate, but either way, this show is more than just history.
