Bahrain Police opened fire Thursday on demonstrators in the Shiite city Deih, west of Manama, according to a human rights activist who was in the area.

According to Nabil Rajab, director of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, close to the opposition, the police fired shotguns and threw grenades at a few hundred people who came out to the streets in a spontaneous demonstration.

An AFP journalist saw the police officers deployed at the entrance to town, launching tear gas grenades.

Several police vehicles blocked the highway linking the neighboring Shiite area and Deih Jidhafs.

Bahraini security forces attacked the Shiite demonstrators on Wednesday gathered in the Pearl Market in Manama and five persons including two policemen, were killed.

Authorities announced Wednesday that the all assemblies, marches and demonstrations are prohibited in the country.
